DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein. Left untreated, the clot can dislodge and move to your lungs, causing pulmonary embolism. It’s important to know your risk factors and symptoms, as nearly half of all cases have no warning signs.

Risk Factors

  • Over 40 years old
  • Major injury or trauma to legs
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Long periods of rest/immobility

Symptoms

  • Tenderness, pain, or hardness of the leg
  • Redness
  • Site may feel hot
  • Swelling

Diagnosis

  • Ultrasound tests are typically used to diagnose DVT

Treatments

  • Medications known as Anti-Coagulants, that prevent blood from clotting
  • Compression hose
  • Thrombectomy (Surgical removal of a clot)
